Staples and Office Depot vow legal fight as officials seek to halt planned merger

Shares in office supply companies fall after Federal Trade Commission comes out against deal, which it says would reduce competition

US regulators moved to block the proposed combination of Staples and Office Depot on Monday because the deal would reduce competition in the office supplies market. The companies say they plan to fight to preserve the deal.

Shares of the two office supply retailers fell sharply after the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced its decision.
