Mergers and acquisitions boom driven by £35bn Shell deal

Value of takeovers of UK firms by foreign companies climbed to £49.4bn between January and March, the highest since second quarter of 2007

The start of the year has marked a booming quarter for mergers and acquisitions for the first time since the financial crisis, owing to two big takeovers of UK firms.

The value of takeovers of UK companies by foreign firms rose to £49.4bn between January and March, the highest since the second quarter of 2007, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). This compares with £9.2bn at the end of 2015.
