BB&T Corp. (BBT) Thursday announced a surge in second quarter net income available to shareholders to $541 million from $454 million in the prior year. On a per share basis, earnings climbed to $0.66 from $0.62 last year. Excluding items net income available was $586 million or $0.71 per share.
