Why Everyone Needs To Donate To Poor Children In Africa

By Barbara Williams

The vast African continent continues to be home to the poorest, most wretched, most desperate people in the world. Millions starve to death each year. Millions more die from diseases that could be treated very successfully if only some medical facilities were available. It is especially the plight of innocent kids that truly needs much more attention from the rest of the world. It is the responsibility of everyone that lead more privileged lives to donate to poor children in Africa.

Millions of people all over the world have become indifferent to the plight of the African kids. They see terrible images on television and read harrowing reports in their newspapers. However, for them the African tragedy is something that has nothing to do with them and that thankful happens a very long distance away. They may spare a brief thought to the matter and they may even be fascinated by the visual impact of images showing desperately ill and hungry kids.

Not everyone is immune to the suffering on the African continent. Some prominent celebrities and even members of the British Royal family has done much to make people aware of the problem and to solicit donations that will help provide food, medicine and educational opportunities. These efforts are extremely worthwhile but it is truly only a drop in the ocean. Lasting change will require much more effort.

It is unfortunate that so many people fail to become involved because they think that their own small efforts will not make any difference. Nothing can be further from the truth. Millions of small effort is almost always more sustainable and effective that one or two very big efforts. Western society, especially, is extremely wasteful and the vast majority of people truly can afford to offer some form of help.

Making regular donations, even small ones, towards helping the African kids is one of the most convenient ways in which to help. It is important, however, to make donations only to organizations that are reputable and that have a proven track record for honesty and efficiency. It is unfortunate that millions of dollars have disappeared due to poor management and opportunist organizations that see charities as lucrative businesses.

Another excellent way in which to make a real difference is to become involved on a personal level. There are several organizations that run educational programs, health facilities and projects that aim to provide water, sanitation and housing to those poorest of the poor. Young people can volunteer to offer their skills and their labour to make a real and visible change.

Even people focusing on creating awareness of the plight of African kids can help. It is not necessary to become a zealot in order to gently and continuously remind friends and family that there are millions of people in dire straits and that they have an obligation to do something about it. Many people do their bit by collecting clothes and food which is then handed to reputable organizations for distribution.

What happens on the African continent is important to the entire global community. Global warming, for example, affects everybody. Disease can spread from one continent to another in the blink of an eye. The African kids deserve help.
